The Slice Report
Join us for a pizza tasting tour right in the heart of Manhattan, surrounded by the iconic skyline and the company of good friends dressed in comfy Heimat shirts. Prepare to savour the flavours and textures of some of New York City's renowned pizza offerings, as we enjoy this culinary treat of classic New York-style slices and pies. We chose five of NYC's pizza hot spots to find the best one for you.
Stop #1 - Scarr's Pizza - was founded in 2016 by Scarr Pimentel, a New York native who learned to make pizza at the legendary landmark Lombardi's. Known for just the right balance of chewy dough and tangy sauce it quickly became a spot for lower east side hipsters and the odd celebrity, Nike even awarded them their own Air Force #1 which is now being traded for up to 35.000$. With a commitment to quality ingredients, a great bar and traditional techniques, Scarr's Pizza delivers a slice of NYC's heritage with every bite. Our tip, have your pie with a bottle of Lambrusco and the delicious romaine salad with their house sauce. Our verdict 9.5 | 10
Stop #2 - Upside is renowned for its innovative approach to the classic New York slice, featuring a perfectly crispy yet chewy crust and a strong balance of savoury toppings. With its modern interior, Upside offers a contemporary spin on the timeless New York pizza experience. You have 5 locations in New York so no excuses. Make sure you try the garlic knots and wash your slice down with one of their canned beers. Our verdict 8 | 10
Stop #3 - Prince Street has gained fame for its iconic square slices, notably the "Spicy Spring" slice, which has a thick, crispy crust, tasty tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and the best spicy pepperoni cups ever. This has the perfect balance of texture and taste which has captured the hearts of locals and tourists. It has a huge celebrity following which you can see on their wall of fame. Additionally, its prime location in the heart of SoHo makes it very hard to not stop by. This does come with a down side as the queues can be very long at peak times, make sure you double order - you wont regret it. Our verdict 9 | 10
Stop #4 - Joe's Pizza is the perfect anytime slice joint that captures the essence of classic New York-style pizza. Located in Greenwich Village (as well as many other NY locations) it's a go-to spot for tourists and locals, made famous by appearances in Spider Man 2 the Connan O Brien show and Grand Theft Auto, it's fair to say it is an NY staple. The slices are generously sized with a thin, slightly crispy crust that provides the perfect base. The ambiance is no-frills and very effective. It offers a reliably tasty, authentic and very reasonably priced slice. Our verdict 7 | 10
Stop #5 - John's Pizzeria is a slice of pizza history in the heart of Greenwich Village. Inside you can feel the true heritage with its vintage decor and bustling atmosphere, even Ol' Blue Eyes Mr. Frank Sinatra has had a pie at Johns. The coal-fired oven imparts a unique flavour to the pizzas, resulting in a perfectly charred crust that's crispy and chewy. The sauce is rich and tangy and the toppings are fresh and loaded. The long wait times and no-reservation policy can be off-putting, but it is worth the wait. John's has a no slice policy so come hungry and bring a mate as they also have great sides. Our verdict 8 | 10.
To finish our field trip and scratch that sweet itch we went to Cones (next door from John's) which should be on your hit list as well. New York's first place to have daily fresh made ice cream.
As a verdict we decided it really is personal preference to what slice you are after. We liked all of them and it really depends on the mood of the day. There are also dozens more great alternatives but hopefully we have offered some of the most current relevant options if you are after a great New York pizza experience.
Enjoy your next visit to the big apple and don't count your calories. Bon appetit!
